111 Monmouth Road, Oakhurst, NJ
Camp Oakhurst

Originally the estate of Herbert Lehman, founder of the Lehman Brothers investment banking firm and later Governor of New York State, Camp Oakhurst at the corner of Monmouth Road and South Lincoln Avenue was started in the main house in 1906 as a summer home for "crippled children" and was funded by the generous efforts of a group of wealthy New York women who summered in Elberon and Deal.

Originally founded by the Crippled Children's East Side Free School, the school closed in 1938, as the public schools began providing education to the handicapped.  The name of the camp was changed to Camp Oakhurst in 1946, as a way to let the children be more free and active.

Today the 15-acre, barrier-free site serves 450 physically disabled children and adults with a year-round program of recreation and rehabilitation. It is run by the New York Service for the Handicapped and supported by the UJA Federation of New York.
