Gardner Farmhouse
Building Constructed Approximately 1840
Building Marked by Township of Ocean Historical Society 1976
The Gardner farmhouse, located at Grant Avenue and Monmouth Road, is said to have been part of the Underground Railroad of the 1850s. A secret tunnel dug to hide fugitive slaves in their flight to Canada and freedom was located in the basement. The anti-slavery movement had many sympathizers in the Quakers who occupied this area of Monmouth County. The home is a private residence today.
